Several years ago I was missing one canary chick each day for a week before we found the snake. After the snake was bumped, the mice, which had been present but not problematic, just exploded.

Currently, I have a low-grade mouse problem in two aviaries, manageable with maintenance baiting every few weeks.
I saw a brown snake by our back corner gate last week, and on reflection have decided to let it be.

They are shy and inconspicuous creatures, and probably (a bit like mice) for every one that you see there are a dozen that you don't.

In principle I agree, but I do draw the line this side of brown snakes. Although given your line of work matty, perhaps you keep some anti-venom close at hand?

I've often thought that keeping a snake (non-venomous and in a cage) within or around aviaries may deter mice such that baits aren't needed. Has anyone tried this?
