Red Crested Finches are slightly more available now as those that have them are running more breeding pairs.
Sadly when some people see them being advertised they start thinking they are common this is not so and
sadly applies to a number of species.
Today you are able to buy good young birds which have every chance of breeding for you.
The person who purchased that lone cock bird was lucky that his original loss was not the hen.
The current selling price for good young sexed birds is around $600
They are an interesting challenge and well worth consideration.

Red cresteds are a beautiful bird and certainly different. Anyone considering them in a mixed collection, be careful. I had a pair for 18 months in a heavily planted aviary with other smaller finches without an issue until breeding. When the cresteds hatched a couple of young, the cockbird went on a killing spree and killed all other birds in the aviary that had red on them... Strawberry cock, pytilia, red faced parrot finches..... 7 birds in total.
I'm not detracting from the species at all, I would of loved to have kept them but just had to accept they weren't suited to my aviaries which are planted (7m x2.5m x 2m) and mixed collections. Since discussing with others who have kept this species, quite a few have had the exact same experience.
