I grow a type of Saltbush Rhagodia spinescens under a wire cage in every aviary the birds eat lots of it and also nest in it here are some pics of it before it started growing faster than the birds could eat it. Without the cage it does not survive as it gets reduced to twigs.

Certainly a native nursery will have it.
If you wanna propagate it it grows from suckering or layering rather than cuttings.

I have no pictures...but I have found a good reference book is, "Birdscaping Australian Gardens' by George Adams....My thoughts are...if they can live with these plants in the wild, they will happily live with them in avaires..
Cheers,

Thank you for the info Mick.

I do have a question though.

Would it be safe to grow peppermint in the aviary? It is a safe herb for us, but I was to be sure for the birds.

I have read that if you plant peppermint around the edges of the aviary, it helps keep mice at bay, as apparently they hate the stuff.

Anyone know?

Thanks so much :D

Actually I was describing my place. :silent: And being the strange person that I am, am busy grumbling at the lack of aphids in the garden.

Shark, in your aviary the plant looks green. In other photos of Rhagodia spinescens the plant looks distinctly silvery. How certain are you of the variety growing in your aviary? Could it be any other kind of Saltbush, because there are a lot of varieties?

Thanks :)
