Birds in hospital cages quite often do show signs of yellow droppings. This is caused by anorexia due to them not eating from the illness. If they are eating OK further investigation would be required.flab wrote:our sick birds have yellow droppings

Thanks Buzz. Not sure if they are eating or not, they have lots of food but whenever I check on them they are just sitting on the perch (or one of them actually perches on the food bowl!). Mmm. Now I really don't know what to do. Should we treat them for protozoal infection just in case???

I would be giving them a broad spectrum antibiotic treatment.Have you addressed electrolytes if not make sure you do after a course of antibiotics.(not during treatment)make sure you keep them away from other birds just in case its a chlamydia strain although not common in finches it can happen. And wash hands and utensils with a antibacterial.

Thanks. have decided to go with broad spectrum antibiotic. They have had spark on and off. Might give them some this morning before we start with the antibiotics. Also giving them soaked seed for extra energy.

Well he got some Avicyline C, best that could be done as the feed stores not open today.
Was told its stronger than the Avicyline.
On the bottle says active ingredient 100mg/g Chlortetracycline hydrochoride
Meant to say the bird is eating really well, but still fluffed and wet vent.
Poops look a bit like the posted pic but bigger and not quite as bright.

If its Chlamydiosis or Enteritis should do the job, will cover other viral infections though. remember hygiene, as Chlamydiosis can be transferred to people.bluebutterfly213 wrote:Chlortetracycline hydrochoride

Hi Diane, hope your friend's birds improve soon. Redwing, how is your bird going? Hubby getting something like Sulfa3, as well as coccivet to cover all bases. The guy at bird place said that is the downside of getting young goulds as they are prone to all sorts of illnesses. He said next time better to wait till fully coloured as by then they are over the worst of the risk period. Took the hospital cage in the sun for 1/2hr. The transformation was amazing. they came to life again, started eating, trying to fly and preening instead of sitting on the perch. And one was calling out to the gouldians in the aviary (maybe two of them are siblings).

Lost my girl today. The male spent all day calling at the entrance to the nest so left it till 4ish and had a look the nest was full of the same undigested seed droppings so have scrubbed the whole floor just in case. Didn't have time to change perches and won't for a couple of weeks. Male not happy still calling even though the nest is out. Will have to read all the other posts again more carefully later.
