Sounds like you need the plant that has the nickname "mile a minute" Trouble is I dont know what its proper name is or if its ok for birds.

No you don't, it's a highly noxious weed killing our waterways http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weedide ... l&card=V27 - and it's much more widespread than this site says (also in Vic and SA & spreading along the Murray)

how about a Genista bush? if it can survive a colony of 25 weavers in the breeding season it could probably stand up to small parrots.

It's parrots for me due to the way they stand out and some species can seem so significant if you know what I mean. I just love their appearance.
I like finches too, but the fact that my favourite finches are parrot finches and gouldians proves that I love the bright colours.
Parrots have their down side like more room, (generally) more costly to buy and feed, but they are (should be) very hardy and have long life spans (crosses fingers and knocks on wood).

Thats probably why Ive never seen it over here, only in the UK

I've got a mixture...and my Bourkes are quiet and non aggressive towards the smaller birds..

I like finches small parrots like neophima parrots and red rumps and I like doves and quails.
I have kept then all.

but not softbills, my friend ;)
probably best wait a while before thinking of going for them.
