Deb I think I have the same problem. Thought it was snails but after baiting the seedlings get smaller so must be birds eatins it. It's annoying.

Try Kale folks.............loves winter, rich in calcium...........Russian red, curley leaf, Siberian, Tuscanny..............

I put a tuscan in last week and the sparrows haven't touched it ...might have to replace the soft leaf plants with the Kale . :thumbup:

Seems not only birds like it................I have the "holiest" kale but nary a bite out of the silverbeet which is next to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kale is rich in calcium, contain a bit of oxalic acid which aint real desireable but then so does silverbeet.

Mind u if the oxalic acid bit worries you most parrots love the weed Fat Hen which is full of the stuff............never had (touching wood!!) a problem with egg-binding or other calcium problems with feeding it regularly..........

my cello teahcer grows kale,
I have heard tell of it far and wide - so might ask her for some seeds :thumbup:

put another one in today and bought a pack of curly kale ... lady at bunnings tells me council is planting Kale as a decorative plant around a new roundabout hmmm wonders if I could just hang out the door and grab as needed :roll:

Sorry Jusdeb that decorative one grows here too............eerrrrrrrrr........lets say I "liberated" some for "scientific research" and it aint the edible sort!!!!!!

bugger oh well the ones Ive got in are edible . Got the bird netting up , looks a little Opera Housish but no matter it will keep the sparrows out .

Other half commented that it would also keep birds in ....say the visiting Crimson wings :lol: settle folks it was a joke. :shifty:
