hmmm, not sure I would call it lucky. This has happened because someone is trying to breed the yellow mutation of the Painted Finch. In their lust for a higher money return on their breeding they cull any normal (red) birds and only keep the yellow ones. They then line bred the yellows to create a pure yellow strain. By culling their red birds they are polluting the limited breeding gene pool. You see, as others have stated, the reds are actually split to yellow, therefore they may pop out yellow chics. But before you get excited about how much more you can sell them for, just think about where we will all be in a few years.

Already there are MANY reports of Red Face Parrot Finches throwing to Sea Green, Normal Gouldians throwing White-breasts, and even Tr-coloured Parrot Finches throwing yellows...the list goes on.

All this has happened because of indiscriminate selling of split birds.

But on the bright, in a year or 2 having true PURE strain birds without mutant genes will command much higher prices.

The finches we have in our aviaries are the ONLY finches we will ever have - no new blood will ever get in. People really should be trying to keep the gene pool as pure as possible. If they want to experiment with genetics then take up Budgie breeding.

even though I do like some of the mutations I must agree with dano 68 .

At what point do we say whoa ... better do something about this ?

Being humans probably at the point of no return ...bye bye normal coloured birds . :(

Human nature (I'll never understand it) A perfectly brilliant naturally coloured bird mutated to plain white or yellow

The best that I have seen is one of the mutations of the red rump parrot. They started off with an undesirable, naturally coloured, emerald green bird with shades of rich blue on it's wings and a fiery red rump ( all apparently too gaudy) and they produced a magnificent bird in near death shades of beige, brown and other earthy tones. Many years of breeding were wasted on producing these specimens, as the price reflected.
I don't know what this mutation was called and furthermore I don't care! I hope they all die out!

If breeders really want to experiment with genetics why not use sparrows and develop multicoloured ones that would rival any parrot, or develop a spice finch with feather extensions and colours to resemble miniature birds of paradise, not take the magnificent birds that we have and dip them in bleach. Having said all that some of the lutinos and other mutations are beautiful in human eyes, but have a plan other than "because you can."

I have to say I look at a lot of the mutations out there and cringe, especially in the parrots....the natural colours blend so nicely together (due to natural selection lol) then we mess with it and end up with these horrible mish mashes.....some of the rainbow lorikeet mutations just make me shake my head, why mess with such a beautiful bird :( It's sad to hear that the same is happening in the finches too, wild tyoe gouldians are just gorgeous....I'm just wondering is there a difference in the productivity between some of these mutations and the wild type....do they attract mates as easily? Is their breeding success as good? I would hate to see the wild type animal die out it would be such a shame :(

Yes the Rainbow mutations are just not right ...drab olives just do not look right .
To be honest I do like some mutations , I have mutations in Red Rumps , Princess and Quarrions and all are beautiful birds however not as beautiful as what mother nature created .
IMO let anyone breed mutation birds without guilt BUT if one does breed mutation birds then be responsible and also breed normals either as a pure bloodline or to put some pure blood back into the gene pool .

I think you would be talking about a cinnamon type mutation T which I agree and wonder "WHY" would anyone do that ?
Then again I breed the Grey and White Red rumps which I find striking birds but others may disagree.
