If you lived near a river or stream getting a weeks worth of Gambusia would only take you half an hour or so...

Legal to collect them, but illegal to release them back into the wild, or transport them cross-state

hmmm..... probably only a matter of time before the population ran out though, and it would almost certainly happen when you had chicks in the nest

for the ecosystem sure but not so much the kingfishers.
alternatively you could build the aviary over a portion of the stream and let them fish themselves

Do you have an opening for an acolyte?
Do tell: do they need lots of live invertebrates with the odd frog, or are they happy with dead fish?
Do they need running water nearby (as I have heard said)?
