well it's no better as of five this morning
Woke up to a crash and rushed out to find the cat had somehow managed to pull away the blankets I'd tied to the cage with wire, and at the same time managed to kill my gouldian and female little button quail.
I forsee dog food for a few weeks not being a problem.
Moving all remaining birds to sunroom.
I was so sure they would be safe, I tied it all on securely and usually the cat doesn't come anywhere near this cose to the house.
Not exactly the welcome home I expected...

That's what I thought too, but he won't go near it.
I'll talk to the council today and try and get a cat trap, and start asking around the neighbourhood to try and find the owner, I got a pretty good look at him.

Hey Jaybird. All I can say is I'm so sorry to hear this, especially when returning from overseas. I hope your bird-sitter is not too devastated as it must have been very distressing for him/her.
As for the cat...death to all cats - apologies to any cat lovers but I am definitely NOT one of those.

Thanks guys...
Cookey yes she was pretty distraught but it's ok, it wasn't her fault just a series of unfortunate circumstances.
Mick, yes that's exactly what I plan to do... Off to bunnings in the next few days to pick up a few things I need for designing the "new" aviary - Cat and ant proof!!

So sorry to hear about your latest mishap Jay... I am a cat lover but can totally understand your frustration, been there myself... electric fence sounds like a plan. Can't remember yoru aviary design, but with ours we have either colourbond or alsonite along the bottom, approx 60-70 cm high. Reduces visibiility but keeps the birds a little bit more protected. Don't give up! As hard as all this is for you, you will be a better bird keeper as a result. Hang in there.

Before you buy anything else,go to a produce store or the internet and get prices and data on electric cattle fence units.
You can get a battery operated one and believe me they work.
Since I invested in one my cat problem ceased.
Run an extra line across the roof(50mm high) or around the edge you can also restrict Owls,Noisy Minars etc
At least do some research

gees mate, sorry to hear.... just my little input, if i was you i wouldn't go around the neighbourhood looking for the cats owner, id just ring the council and let them take care of it, if the cat ever disappeared the owners would come after you thinking you killed it or something, plus if the owners are letting the cat roam at night then they are bloody Idiots anyway.... and would probs laugh in your face if you accused them of their cat wondering at night.Jayburd wrote:That's what I thought too, but he won't go near it.

get some traps and let the council take the cat, if they know the owner they get fined, if they don't they re home or putdown,
E Orix could you give me a brand name of the battery operated cattle fence unit?? or know of ones to avoid? curious myself to have a look.

Misso
The unit I have is a Thunderbird M50 It is a good unit and it works(sadly by experience).
It is far too big for most backyard needs.
Thunderbird also make Battery and Solar units and are quite small
I have emailed the manufacturer with regard info etc.
There are other makes Daken also make a cheap little unit.
As soon as I get more details I will post them.
In the mean time Google Thunderbird Electric Fence Units
Personally I can't understand why anyone living in a city doesn't have one.
It will keep any furry, feathered pest at bay if set up properly and will even give any human night visitors a real wake up call.
