It's the owners that I would like to hit with an electric fence or drop my mastiff guard dog in their yard and see if they complain when he upsets their lifestyle.
Second that - especially the scumbags that dump them.

Very true indeed . The owners are responsible .

If you have to deal with a cat problem Id like to see its demise short and swift .

Time to take a chill pill Vanetta.

I am a responsible pet owner....none of my animals have any impact on my neighbours.....it's funny how you didn't take offence to the suggestions of shooting the animal but took offence to my "rumor"....I have not used the method but would use appropriate methods to protect my birds....maybe you should put yourself in the shoes of those breeders who have picked up several dead birds that died from night flight during the night....birds that were perfectly healthy before night fall the day before...birds that the breeder may have put a heap of time into developing a healthy and strong strain of bird.

I would start with talking to my neighbour.....BUT WHAT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THE STUPID CAT COMES FROM!!!!

Maybe if EVERY cat owner was responsible and kept their cat inside at night this discussion would not need to be happening.

This is a bird forum.....not a promotional site for the cat protection society.

And as Craig has pointed out....others are watching....so I reiterate that I don't like seeing any animal hurt....but I reserve the right to protect those who reside at my home!!!!

I dont think it matters who is watching .

We can have opinions and I dont think we are the lone rangers here ....people all over dislike cats for various reasons even if it just be them pooping in old mates garden.

If you must have them then keep them under control ...no mean feat considering their instinct is to chase and kill .

If you must knock them then do it quickly .

If this post must get tacky then lets wrap it up .... thats what brings the forum down ...Just saying .

A lot of the comment here is assuming that cats are owned. I live in a relatively new estate and already we have a number of homeless cats in the area, including one which had a half gown in the under-rod drainage system.

Some years ago I drove cabs at night in Brisbane. At times it was very difficult to miss cats on the road. It would be a starnge night if I did not see more than a dozen on the roads.

I think some cat lovers should do a midnight to dawn drive through their suburb, and see the extent of the problem.

PS: We had a cat that lived for 16 years and was never out at night.

Coming along the Golden Highway at night seeing them where there are no houses for miles ..These things have adapted to being free range .
Good point hey ...they dont all have owners BUT once they did even if it was many generations ago.

We inadvertently moved into a neighborhood with at least two dozen cats in the immediate vicinity.
One in particular, a small black and white one, is a real pain in the neck (all to literally for my female button quail)
I've seen every one of them out at night at one point or another.
We keep our birds and dogs under control, why can't they keep their cats under control??

I found this article on the home range of cats, there is a mention of an Australian study too.

I did try and find the study it refers to but saw only an extract.

Its a bit amazing to me that they can adapt so easily .
The gutter cats here are small , very small and perfect for shimmying along the gutter and escaping through small spaces and yet Ive them at Bowen Mountain that were so big the traps could barely contain them .

There will always be a cat problem because maybe 5% look after their cats and keep them under control, maybe 40% care about them and being good cat owners let them out at night as that is what they presume is correct and the 55% left just couldn't give a toss.
I personally don't like cats but alot do and they can be good companion animals, sadly they are a preditor especially if they go feral.Generally they are just pests.
As for mice and rat catchers,I wouldn't rely on them to even reduce the pests a fraction. They are too smart for the house cat so they chase birds outside the aviary and from on top.
You could poll cat owners and ask one question "Does your cat roam" there would nearly be a universal answer"My cat never leaves the backyard"Fat chance.
If in a city get the electric fence unit or trap them and hand them over to the pound. It will soon sort the owners out when there wallets get emptied.
Pity we couldn't put the owners in the pound.
