Harvey,

I don't want to go into pedantics but they will need access to live food, fruit etc etc and etc from sunrise to sunset. They are dependant upon YOU for the nutrition of themselves and their chicks. I saw a bit of a documentary on blackbirds and robins who are back and forth to the nest and it was astounding the amount of live food the chicks consumed. Have seen bul buls and silvereys breeding in my backyard and was amazed at the amount of times they attended to feed the young. Not so many times when just hatched but then it ramped up considerably. After fledging it was even moreso. Don't rush, gain your experience and then broaden your horizons but try not to swim out of your depth too early.

Harvey
Going by your post of late I really don't think you are ready for any Softbills.
The questions and opinions you have asked have been good but it also gives me the impression you need to spend alot more time
learning our hobby than spending alot more money.
Get what you already have under control and start breeding them consistantly. They are so different in requirements and management
than what you have kept in the past and now. They can be very frustrating and difficult at times as well

Harvey I'm going to be harsh here, I've been on his forum for less than 6 months I think and in that time I have seen you change your mind on what you want to keep it seems from week to week, how much things are worth (ie how much money can I make) seems to be more important than anything and you aren't becoming proficient in anything before moving on to the next thing. These are living breathing animals not toys to be tossed aside when you get bored with this one over and over again. Do some REAL reading find something you like and become the best you can be at it rather than searching for the next best thing, you really will get much more joy and a sense of achievement out of it by doing something well rather than dabbling in things over and over.

I will second that, just by watching the pair of blackbird we have in the garden. We have a large pergola that is covered with 4 vines and we got a plague of black caterpillars that chewed whole leaves down to the stem in a couple of hours and these leaves arent small about 150 to 200 ml wide grapevine size, we thought we might lose all the plants. Within in a couple of days there wasnt a caterpillar to be seen, it was exhausting just watching the parents fly back and forth hunting these caterpillars down.

Harvey, I usually don't participate in your threads for 3 reasons:
1. I sometimes have to read through your posts 3 or 4 times to work out what you are trying to say. (Credit where credit is due, you are improving on this score)
2. You don't seem to pay any heed to half the advice people go to the trouble of posting. Or even seem to bother reading the relplies half the time.
3. You don't seem interested in reasearching stuff for yourself.

As for this thread, I don't get how you can happily spend a couple of hundred bucks on birds, but won't get off your butt and buy a book that will only cost you $50. You've got your priorities completely upside-down. :irked:

Harvery123456789, I don't believe everyone is giving you to much of a hard time, just giving some heart felt advise, trying to save you some dollars, as well as some heartache. I have taken some hard hits over some of my questioning, be that as it may be, books are good, just as I flipped over worming, and ASM issues, I had lots of answers, as I had my sister ship my Animal Technology Books (same as vet nurse, here) to me, little and behold on the shelf "Diagnostic Parasitology," and learn not only why lots of these issues are foreign to me, but what to do about it. Reading, leaning, makes for good educated questions. However, I feel no question is too stupid, in view of the fact, there are lots of people into animals that have learning disabilities. Take some time to think things through.

Well until now I have kept away from this topic didn't even read it until just now, personal choice is to avoid everything written by this ignorant person.
The information and opinions that have been provided have made for some very informative reading, my thanks to those with knowledge who have taken the time to answer.
It is great to have quetions asked here on the forum, after all that is why we are all here. To learn from each other by sharing knowledge.
As usual though Harvey you dont appear to be reading the answers that have been provided.
For the sake of the birds I hope that you either start learning to read and understand some of this information.
If you are unable to understand the written word then hopefully you will never have the money to buy the birds you ask about.
Wish I could have used the shorter version of this post but the language censor wouldnt allow it.

From me to you. You don't know how close I came to being given at least 10 minutes in the sin bin and placed on report for a grade 4 tackle by the censors/mods!
