If mum is producing all hens don;t complain. Though for mutation production this is not as good a thing as in other circumstances. Most finches breed more cocks than hens so a hen that is a heavy hen producer is worth her weight in gold.

So over a week has passed and I have returned from work and the chick has left the nest and looking healthy.

As most expected and a part of me did as well the redness in the eye has basically all gone with only a hint left which I feel will disappear completely in time.
I must say the red in the eye did last a lot longer then usual and although its almost completely gone I'm still happy with what has become.

I will try and get it through the moult and cross it out and work with its offspring. I'm undecided at this stage what to cross it back to, DFy has its advantages as does a good strong normal but that's still a while away yet.

Either way this birds parents have started laying again so there is a good chance there will be another just like this one to play with as well.

Lets see how long this little guys eyes stay red for, if they are red at all.

Also there is another two fertile eggs yet to hatch so fingers crossed I might jag another one in this same nest.

I've had similar outcomes with Single Factors that I believe may be carrying the Blue Head coloration. In the nest some young have red eyes, but this turns to normal color as the chick gets older. Have any of the young single factor birds produced from this pair shown a blue fusion coloration over the head?

Nice looking birds as well...keep working with them.

Hi Paul,

I have had no blue'ish colouration appear on any of the young at any age but to be totally honest I haven't looked at the other chicks as hard as I probably should have been.

I'm guessing you mean the head/eye area before feathers start to appear.

The birds that have been showing red eyes once eyelids have open all have had an orange tinge to all its body and display white, yellow, white nodules like AusYellows/Lutino's.

Hi Rich,

In my birds that have produced the "blue head" it is not until the first moult that it is noticeable....are the red eyed bird(s) pictured the first time these have been produced?
