Oh I thought it there was another method as well as the three already posted. I can see the difference you mention in the cheeks. I can also see the difference in the wing markings. I have seen some pics of the other method too based on the beak size. I believe this is also a method for sexing Java's too.
I have been using this beak method on BFPF youngsters with some success too.

Thats site I was referring to
Telling the parrot finches apart can be really difficult. I find the mask of the males is brighter and larger, it extends further back past the eye than the females.

had a look at some of my adult birds today dano and though there was no clear "bulge" of white around the wing like in your pic, males definitely did have more white in this area while my hens have an almost perfectly formed straight boundary between black and white. so thats plus 4 correct sexings for adult birds for your trial. will check youngins soon, too warm outside already!

After reading your ideas on sexing firetails, am looking forward tomorrow in seeing what pairs I may have. I have 11 diamonds, one proven pair, the other 9 I have no idea; didnt know whether to put them all together to see what happens or go by your method and split them into two groups. Will let you know. thanks :flower:

If you can get some photos Ben, post them here so others can have a go - they were too active for me. And when holding them, the feathers in that area always seem to get mucked up so it's hard to be sure. My adult pair certainly comply with the OP - ie. cock has more white and hen is smooth line.
