I agree, you would have to REALLY like the look of them to pay that kind of money out.

Not sure if they are the same species but Danny who owns this website says that he keeps Oriental Magpie Robins.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOh Nice. Not practical for me in my circumstances, but very nice just the same. A few of the birds mentioned on this thread are listed for sale in the Birdworld Catalogue for Auction on 23-5-10 Finches not softbills.

Having kept both species I doubt if a successful cross will occur or has occurred.
My opinion is that while both are classed as related I have serious doubts about how close.
In the wild they will habitat similar areas yet I doubt if natural crosses have occurred.
The females can be quite agressive and will kill a cockbird.
Personally I feel the attempted crossing is a folly and to pay 7K for the pair is madness
That for a pair of Shama possibly and maybe $2000 for a pair of Magpie Robins but not odds.

peter mandry says there are only 3 shama cocks in the country - he states one is kept alone and, referring to his mismatched birds, that he has already sold one "pair".

i am thus assuming that these 3 shama cocks represent the last of their kind in the country and that mandry paired his last two cocks with OMR hens out of necessity - there simply are no shama hens left to pair with.

personally, whilst i understand that when a bird species becomes rare, its price becomes exorbitant - i think once a species becomes functionally extinct - the animals become rather worthless. i'd question paying even $50 for a shama cock if i knew i would never find a hen to pair it with.
