Wild finches and release programs?

Assuming there was a suitable habitat available for release (which I doubt or the problem wouldn't exist), I can't see why we (as aviculturists) wouldn't get behind a captive breeding initiative. I know I'd be honoured to set up a suitable aviary and breed wild stock for release. I assume many others would also be more than willing. In captivity and with many breeders the number bred could be large, hence the survival rate of those released can be low yet still be economically viable. I suspect I'm being incredibly naive?

The Problem is trust, or more, the government not trusting us... If, when they breed up the numbers abit, they could do wonders with the Orange-bellied Parrot, we've (avicuturists) have more or less mastered breeding of Neophemas. But we can't be trusted. Same with Swift Parrots, endangered in the wild (But I've seen em!), but there's no public effort to restore their number...

Sadly we probably can't be trusted... besides a select few of us.
Look at the hideous genetic vandalism we've done to the captive Gouldian flock, with almost all birds now carrying mutant genes and a lot of the precious genetic variability obliterated.
With the Gouldian critically endangered in the wild, what we've done to most of our birds in the captive flock is a total disgrace to the hobby.
