GregH wrote:20 seconds in the microwave is unlikely to sterilise anything and certainly not dried grass however any longer risks starting a fire so don't do it! Microwaves basically only heat liquid water and other polar molecules and can not even effectively heat ice let alone dried egg-shells and other dessicated substances. Many insects, like weevils, are themselves on the dry side, containing insufficient water to be greatly affected and they happily wander around in the oven while it is on for periods up to 5 minutes. If you want to sterilise things like this put them in something like an ice-cream container with a damp cloth and then microwave it for 3 minutes and the steam generated will be much more effective at killing than dry microwaving. I've seen fires in microwave oven on two occasions from people trying to quickly dry plant material so be careful not to let things dry out during extended periods in the microwave.
Thanks GregH, that's what I wanted to know, I've done that with the Feathers, I don't remember if I added some water on the bottom of the container but I was curios was it possible. In this post I wanted to know has anyone done it! I realize the risk but if they are in a Microwave proof container and you experiment starting from 5 seconds you'll quickly learn when is to much. When I said grass I was thinking off a plastic bag but on the second thought maybe not a good idea! :petrified: But I'll try in a plastic container with damp cloth, but as SamDavis said what's the point "the Microwave is not big enough".
Probably most would agree it's unnecessary!

I'd be interested to know just how many people sterilise nesting material etc. I personally think that it's pretty low risk material and have never bothered (it's very nearly pure cellulose, is dried and has been UV irradiated from the sun). Completely aseptic aviculture will ensure that the birds will have inadequate and naive immune systems making them more susceptible to even minor and inevitable microbiological contamination. Harvey I hope you wait until your parents are away before putting wet grass in the clothes drier - it's not the sort of thing I'd let my kids do even if they clean up afterwards (another of my dreams).

i can hear the more "seasoned" fincho's tut-tutting away to themselves regarding most of these posts....but i suppose we will never know unless we ask!!!
many things can have dire effect on our birds, i dont think nesting grass is one of them.
i like sam's approach.....give them plenty of choice and they will know whats best for them.

Purifying nesting grass????? WTF? been breeding finches for 30yrs it hasn't killed them yet (except 1 strand of hession caught on leg of finch coming out of nest)....I think this is just over the top...bit like killing every bug then wondering why we get sick straight up.....

My concern was more the parasites then as you say "Purifying nesting grass" we are talking about completely two different things.

No I read your post and others about putting grass etc in microwave...thats a bit over the top IMO....Parasites? they will get in an aviary, cage whatever, unless you put them in a sterile environment,(next it will be only use irradiated seed for goodness sake they are a living creature used to living in much harsher environments then we give them credit for)... I think it is a total waste of time and are just over thinking everything..Like I said I have been breeding finches successfully for 30yrs and have no problems regarding nesting material..

It kind of bothers me after seeing young Rainbow Lorikeets at the bird feeder covered in feather lice, I only touched the bird and they were so fast my hand was covered as well, also I caught a baby Mynah bird covered with what I think were a different kind of Mites engorged in blood. Therefore no harm in being concern! Here in Sydney we see a bug we quickly call Pest Exterminator, Police, Fire-brigade, Rspca, Customs and ASIO, maybe different over there in Queensland!

Netsurfer you just acknowledged what I said...they are covered in parasites, they fly over or land on aviaries top or sides or whatever, something will drop off them, nesting grass sure it may the bugs/parasites but microwaving isn't going to stop them getting into aviaries...mites are in most nest boxes come out and feed on young and parents thats why we coopex everything...and even then 2/3months later they're back....goodluck trying to keep them all out :D :D
