It's got a leg ring Tiaris so I'm guessing captive. Agreed- the best coloured chat I've seen in a long time!Tiaris wrote:Is the Chat an aviary bird? & if so what's fed to him maintain the brilliant colour?

Yeah the chat is one of poitta's. From memory it was on some canary red factor... but I may be wrong so you'll need to wait for poitta to confirm.
The wren is a wild one though. Was so friendly I had to take a step back to get my camera to focus on it!

Well do I give away my secrets. A can of pillar box red from mitre 10 does the trick....
...the chats get a few drops of canary red factor mix in the nectur every second day in a shot glass, but I also have in the aviary a small ruby salt bush or two in the cage , its hard to stop the other birds from eating its succulent leaves so its caged off. I pick the fruit and place them in a dish for them to eat when ripe, also I have about 5 eromphila plants in there two of which are red flowering so if that has any thing to do with it
last but not least the soft food I place in is wombaroo insectavore mix with danny fav spiralina added, I am not to sure how much they eat of it, but he is rather bright, she has some colour as well, my success hasn't been great this ( my first with them ) yet as everytime I thought they had a nest I found either plumheads , masked or painted finches on the nest they had built, so I removed all but the painteds the other week as they had babbies in a nest and fingers crossed as they are building a new one in some dried brush, I put my money on the blue bush in there for a nest but not yet,( yet another plant diamond firetails love to eat) maybe next season.....pete

With this wet spring you never know Pete. Luck may be with you. Those of you guessing names have forgotten Redwing.
