So are you going to build completely new avairys in a different part of the yard. Or close off part of what you have and keep the birds in part while replacing the other part with the "New improved" version?

i think get rid of a few of the birds then do a refurbish on the aviaries. probably start with cementing the floors first. bit of a problem as i still have diamonds and gouldians feeding young - but i do think my dirt floors in some section are a problem..... i guess the mouseholes tell me that
really can't pull the down - i;d have to get council permission plans etc to rebuild so that ends that,

out today - this is the first young from the fawn pied hen. appears it jumped the nest two or three days early but thankfully a couple of hours later it returned to the nest.
at the moment there are 5 pairs setting in this aviary and 3 pairs have young. thought i'd get this shot while it was still perched - with mutations there either sitting on the perch or laying on their back.
has not been easy getting this hen to breed successfully

1st nest taken by rats.
2nd nest cock bird went missing
3 rd nest while checking what i thought was a dis-used nest i blocked her escape from the entrance tunnel.......never returned.
4th nest here we go

so to see a young fawn pied straight off it will be interesting to see the siblings. weather cold and wet today at 8 degrees

It's supposed to be 3rd time lucky not 4th. But 4th beats not at all. Congratulations to you and the Diamonds. Nice looking chick.

thanks all. will be interesting what else comes out from the nest. bit concerned that it jumped the nest 3 or 4 days too early. didn't go back to the nest tonight. a day or two will tell if the early jump into the world was worth it

WB,i think its about time you checked for young birds on the floor every evenning and if so catch them up and put them in some thing warm for the night and release them back early in the morning. It's a shame you know their there and you know they are going to succumb to the elements. With exspensive birds like that each bird you save is a bonus.
You say you are going to concentrate on blue gouldians,in Winter and early Spring if you leave any young on the floor over night you can guarantee they will be dead in the morning.
The birds in our aviaries are in our trust so they shouldn't have to die if we don't keep a close eye on whats going on.Sorry to be so harsh but i have saved many young birds by doing as i have said. Craig :o
