The hind leg looks lean and long because of how it is hung.
The ferals, apart from being bigger, are generally heavier in build than domesticates.
That they should evolve this quickly is no surprise; the domesticated varieties have evolved in the same time frame in the opposite direction, and there is real selective pressure for size and cunning as they are effectively the apex predator and therefore only have to worry about other cats. There are good historical examples where selection for advantage in intraspecies aggression goes so far as to sabotage the ecological effectiveness of the whole organism, eg: sabre-tooth tigers and those rams whose horns got so big that they got tunnel vision.
If I catch my big lurking Ginger I will post a photo for gruesome delectation. He is not as big as the one in the photo, though, by a long chalk.

Avid amateur aviculturalist; I keep mostly australian and foreign finches.

Well you certainly wouldnt want to corner one as big as that, it could do you some serious damage just trying to get away, and the fact that is probably hasnt come up against anything bigger than itself would probably mean is has no fear of you either.

By mistake my brother and I cornered one once , not a big one .
It spat , hissed , lunged , threw windmills with those razor sharp claws and screamed like a banshee .
It found a way out and shot off like a flash . Lets just say clean underwear was in order and a real respect for these natural born killers was developed .

Yes ...sighted and reported to be big as Pumas . NOT proven yet .
Theres been sightings of big black cats in the bush for as long as I can remember . Warragamba for instance is rife with rumor of escaped big cats that have gone on to breed in the bush ...There used to be the African Lion Safari at Warragamba and there certainly is a lot of bush for them to disappear into .
I have only seen feral cats too big for a normal cat trap and as big as a medium sized dog so that's all I can comment on however my mind is open to anything getting about in some of the more isolated parts of the country .
On the other end of the scale the feral cats in town here are tiny little things , perfect for quick getaways in drain pipes , gutters etc .
My mini dachsund is bigger than most of them.

Deb,
How big are the tiny ones what would they be to scale with? And do you see them often and are they a problem with your birds?.
Thanks Nathan
