Not very good for me. Have had two lots of 4 chicks hatch out get to about two weeks old and then find them dead in the box full crops and big looking chicks. Should add from the same pair.

how cold is it there? I seem to remember Goulds stop sitting after young hatch at about 10 days...young would not be feathered enough to keep warm...

hi vettepilot_6
Your problem with cold weather is the exact reason I built my latest avairies with fully insulated roof and walls.....so once the hen does not sit on the young i don't come into the avairy the next morning and inspect a full box of chicks with full crops....and stone cold dead. I have found that the insulation has eliminated this problem during colder months in Melbourne.

I really dont think cold weather is the problem, we have had good weather here. The aviary is very well protected from the elements ,fully planted lots of area to roost both under cover and in the open. My aviary is about 3.8mts square with an additional flight area of 5mts longx2mts highx1.8wide. Ihave only 8 pairs with only the one pair breeding alough, most are only young birds.

Tony,
I was providing information about the losses I experienced in my old set up....many times I lost whole nests of young at the time the hen stopped sitting on the nest during the night....in the morning I would find 3 or 4 young dead....still with full crops....these chicks could be heard from outside the avairy the night before...so I put that down to the lack of insulation. My avaries were very well protected from the wind, yet I still had this problem.
My new set up (second season) is insulated and I have not lost a chick in this fashion.
Vettepilot commented on how cold it was....obviously there are many reasons why goulds don't breed...yes young/inexperienced birds is one obvious reason...i was providing Vettepilot with an insight into the problem I once had.........but what works for one breeder may not work for another....this forum is for others to share their experiences....none of us have all the answers and a 100% fool proof method of breeding gouldians...I have used pieces of information from this forum and combined it with my own knowledge/experience to operate my setup....I'm sure everyone else does the same.
Cheers
Paul

Hi Tony to me it sounds like it was the cold weather if the young died with full crops, same time
if the weather at night gets below 7 or 8 deg .good luck whith the next batch of young.
cheers flavio

Hello Gouldianpaul ,in my last post i was not doubting you or your knowledge of the Gouldians it was just my thoughts on my situation. I am sorry if you took offence but it was not my intention.

HI Tony,
No offense taken....I was providing the reasoning for my original post.
The problem with internet posts is that it is some times difficult to transfer your emotion behind your thoughts....words don't always explain how you are feeling towards a topic....but just to reiterate no offence was taken....happy bird keeping
Cheers
