Well finally.... I have maggots! Persistence pays off in the end after all.

Just before I bury this thread, I've got one more question fellas!

When hatching pupae do you cover them with a dry mix of bran only or not bother? I found when I put about an inch and a half of dry bran onto of the pupae the flys died in the mix!?

My "breeder mix" includes a bit of everything including maggots of various sizes, pupae, bran and milk. Every few days I spoon off the dry top layer, add a spoonful of older maggots and pupae and a spoonful of bran/milk mix.

I think you have answered your own question, why would you want to put mix on top that kills your pupa - they need to be dry and have air - they are living organisms and smothering them with dry mix as you have found only ends up bad.

My birds get a new lot of Maggots each morning. There are generally quite a number still uneaten in the bowls.
The bowls are emptied into a large plastic container quite near the feeding stations.
As the flies pupate and hatch in these boxes the birds really snap them up.
The flies haven't a chance as they are eaten before they get a chance to use their wings.
Non wasted.

Ok, l have about 30 maoggots. they are in a fast food container in a mix of bran, milk powder and water. I just wait now for them to turn into flies and put in another food sauce container and I should be in Business. Any tips on getting this thing up and running?
