I got a Hand Raised Mallee Ringneck for Christmess from my dad they are extreamly rear hand raised and birdville has been running for 60 years and they have never had mallee ringnecks before hes a great bird and very colorfull and rear.

Yes they are a lovely colored parrot and I have never heard of the hand raised before he was $300 his really tame . At birdsville they had so many different types of hand reared birds Mullee ring necks , king parrots , princess parrots , long billed corellas , eclectus parrots, macaws ,little lorikeets and purple crowned lorikeets and alot more all hand raised. Hes a great hand raised parrot. Im going to get S/him DNA sexed.

A few pwople I know hand rear them they can often be seen for sale at Mullions Produce in Orange .
They make great pets if training is enforced else they will give a nasty bite . Beautiful bird and one of the ones on my wish list .

Deb is $300 a good price to pay for a hand raised mullee ring neck?. I have been training him all day and he has bit me a few times but if he does I yell at him. You should definatly get one they are great.

Nathan,
Negative reinforcement doesn't work with parrots. Best to give positive reinforcement when he does something good and simply ignore negative behaviour.

DONT yell at him ..if he bites give him a time out in his cage straight away . Take him out again in an hour and if he bites then back into the cage . Yelling only reinforces the aggression and turns it into a power struggle .

Im helping a friend work through this biting crap with a hand reared Princess Parrot and the time out method has worked well in just a few weeks .

$300 city prices I think is probably fair , the are cheaper out here Im sure .

Oh a training tip ...keep a pack of pine nuts on you all the time ( they love them ). As Sam said reward good behaviour with a pine nut , a head scratch and a good boy / clever boy in a soft voice .

Have you googled parrot training tips ? Really should have a basic knowledge of such things before getting the bird as any damage you do can often not be repaired so a nippy bird now becomes a biting pain in the bum and you will wonder what happened to your beautiful hand reared bird.

So if he bites me I put him in his cage. Ok I will. And I will buy some pinenuts. Should I feed him peanuts?.
