Male chasing female away

We had two young painteds fledge today. A red and a yellow from red parents. The male has been fussing over them and seemingly encouraging them to fly. I have seen them beg for food but instead of feeding them dad will fly off and waits for them to follow (which they aren't doing yet). I have also noticed that he is chasing the female away from the nest and chicks. Is that common behaviour? We didn't notice this with their previous two clutches.

I have actually seen this before with the cock bird trying to force the hen back to nest I'd be removing the male until the young are independent.
