Well after a gruelling 23 hour flight from Frankfurt Germany back home to sweet canberra I was not at all pleased.
Firstly, the hot weather caused my nose to go off like a bomb, I always get nosebleeds in hot weather
Secondly, the 350 - euro piece of beautiful sandstone my mother bought in Paris had broken somewhere in our travels, which put a bad light over the day
and lastly, I was shocked to learn what had happened to my birds.
As some of you know, we had about a week and a half's heavy rain here in canberra, and despite the best efforts of my bird sitter apparently some birds just turned up twigs.
Also not helping was the neighbourhood cat (sensing our beagle had left for our grandmother's place) decided to pay a visit.
So instead of being welcomed home by baby saints and jacarinis, which were nesting when I left, I was greeted by 9 out of 19 birds from my original collection.
It's F*****g devastating.
I currently now own:
a pair of jacarinis
a pair of tri nuns
a male plumhead
a female gouldian
a single one out of four saint helenas
and a pair of button quail.

I pulled the bodies of my female plumhead and one of the saints from inside the saint nest were apparently they must have taken shelter. I found the cordon hen's body under the quail hut. The rest are MIA, although I expect my birdsitter picked them up.

So what do I do now? I'm really not cut out for this, I can't stand it when my finches die. Should I even bother replacing them? I'm really not doing well at this, and after E orix was kind enough to give me those birds... I don't know.

So sad for you Jay, it's hard when that happens. Take your time, don't make any rash decisions based on your hurt. I cried when my first ever superb wren cock died, but stepped back in to the water and now have 1 fledged chick and more in the nest - that's the good thing about birds, new life happens too.

Thanks guys... yes buzz I suppose it does...
but should I just replace them? get a whole bunch of zebbies and start from scratch? I have no idea. It seems pointless to just replace them.
At least I can take some comfort in the fact that cat proofing on the roof is going up mid jan

How sad for you.
After things have settled a bit you will be able to look a bit on the brighter side. The birds you have left must be the really tough ones and a great foundation.
After this long holiday overseas you probably will be home for quite a while so you will be around to keep and eye on any new birds you get.

Its one of those "I give up moments" added to jet lag and the heat , its normal to feel this way anyhoo betcha $10 by tomorrow you will get your enthusiasm back , pick up the pieces and make plans for the future of your aviary .

Sorry about your birds Jay and no not a nice thing to come home to . :(

Jayburd, sorry to hear about your birds mate!

as is mentioned a bit on this forum, if you have live birds you have dead ones. like buzz said shlt happens unfortunately.

its just a shame you lost soo many and whats worst is you don't know for sure what happened to them.

i would consolidate on the birds you have at the moment, buy the single birds of what you have left over to make the pairs and go from their.

again sorry to hear mate, chin up, im sure you will have success breeding finches in no time.

you're probably right Deb...
Talk about hardy... no wonder the last saint and jacarini hen weren't killed, I've been in there periodically trying to catch the bloody things and move them to a holding cage while I sort things out about the cat but they will not be caught!
got all the others though.

EDIT:
Thanks Jarryd :) will do... It is a pain not knowing what went down, especially with the saint helena nest complete with male saint and female plumhead inside... that could've been interesting.

Oh well it doesn't make life any easier but sadly thats bird keeping.
We will work out what you need and I am sure there are a few birds hanging around.
This is one of the reasons we talked you out of Blue Caps, sadly we all experience the ups and downs.
I hope your holiday was great and I will be in touch
