Mini Mealworms

I have bought mini mealworms from time to time, my thinking being that the minis are better suited to the smaller finches.
When I get them from the pet supply store they are small, however after a few weeks they seem to get to basically the same size at normal mealworms
I know if you search on google minis and normal mealworms are meant to be different.
I guess the question im asking is the minis you buy commerially really minis or just small normal mealworms.
Thanks
Geoff

Hi Geoff, The real mini meal worms are nealy black in colour and only 10mm or so in length. They are 3 times faster than normal mealworms and can't be mixed with them as they are carniverous but they are perfect for finches that just bite the heads of the larger mealworms. Cheers Craig

I have the mini meal worms, the beetles and worms are much smaller than the standard meal worm. They seem to be breeding better in the warm weather lately.

Oh, so I have some minis mixed with my normal ones then... I was wondering what the little mutant black ones were... Will have to pull some out then and put them in a different container.

In the trade "Mini mealworms" is the name given to small ordinary mealworms . The small black ones are another species and are called "Lesser Mealworms" and must be cultivated in a much more moist environment. I give mine the usual bran with soaked dog biscuit and the pulp from the vegetable and fruit juicer and they thrive. The birds love them.

Thanks for all the feed back.
Looks like I need to find Lesser Mealworms rather than Minis.
Any idea on the relative food value of "lesser" as opposed to normal mealworms anyone ?
I recently ordered maggots on internet due to the bad press feeding mealworms only as a live food gets.
Thanks
Geoff
