Goodness me. That's a very sorry state of affairs for all parrots (including OBPs).Danny wrote:The vaccine has been ready for 20 years + - nobody want's to pay for it to be registered
I've no idea how vaccine registration works, but surely there's a worldwide market? What sort of money are we talking about?Myzomela wrote:...The Australian bird market is too small to make the vaccine registration worthwhile.

There would have been a worldwide market, except that the incidence of PBFD in parrots in the US and Europe has dropped to nearly zero since they stopped importing legally wild-caught birds from overseas. Now it remains endemic mainly in budgies & lovebirds there.

I'm sure all release birds would be thoroughly screened before release and any potential health risks they might pose to the wild population would be carefully considered.maz wrote:And then birds have been released into the wild population from said facilities.....Myzomela wrote: So somewhere, someone has stuffed up.

I would almost be certain that if it weren't for bird breeder's, lots more would be indangered. It is the person fancy that saves them. Thank goodness PETA isn't in Australia!
