Can anyone tell me if there is a way to identify a split or do you have to go on trust ?

Mostly you have to go on trust. But some types of birds will occassionally have a visual pointer. Like the Australian Yellow gouldian split will sometimes have a white chin spot. But not all do. And some say the split blue Gouldian is bluer than a normal. Still testing this one.

"Split" is usually, (too) simply put, (or should be) a term for a bird that carries a recessive trait in its genes but does not express it..............the genetic term is a heterozygote................meaning for the gene pair for a particular trait contains one dominant and one recessive gene (genotype) of course only the dominant gene is expressed in the Phenotype (what the trait/bird looks like!!)

So no, a true split you cannot tell........trust is paramount.........we were once told that Red-face with a couple of yellow feathers or were "splits" for pied..................actually they ARE pieds just very poor ones!!! As we reckon pied is a dominant trait anyway in Red-face you cannot have a split pied bird!!.....................feel free to argue that one....................
