Hi Guys,

I own two male canaries, they are 2 or 3 months old and cant wait for them to turn 6 to 8 months so I can hear them sing
They are already chirping and my red factor sounds like he wants to belt out but can't

I'm after other song birds, I would like to own an American Goldfinch (amongst others) but cant see any for sale in Sydney

Can someone please tell me some good song bird breeds and that way I can make a list of what I want to own and go from there?

Cheers Rocco

P.S Anyone own a pair of Cut-throat finches and want to sell them ??

Javas and Cubans both have a nice song. But I have only ever heard the Javas sing when they have a mate. While the Cubans sing all the time.

Hooded siskins are also very good singers when breeding- they mimic other birds in their song (or what appears to be mimicry to human ears) I have heard willy wagtails and pee wee songs included into their song.

For songbirds you would have to look towards softbills.
Pekin Robins or Schama's (if still available in Oz) would top the list.

of course the price might be an issue.

The spanish canary we call a "timbrado" has quite a nice and unique sound.

Other than that I recommend gold finches. They are cheap and tough plus they will sing well.

p.s If you find either timbrados or german rollers please let me know as I would like some also.

Pretty sure Shama`s are gone and Pekin Robins will set you back somewhere between 2-3 grand.
