I WILL STEP IN HERE.
We have no right to condemn some one in another country for doing something we don't approve of.
Few Countries have the same approach and system as we do in Australia.
The major reason started not because of ethics but the desire to keep our birds pure and being able to breed.
It is nearly 60 years since a regular flow of importrd finches came into Aust.
You can assist our overseas member thats fine but do not critisize him or others.
If we accept that the birds had no way to cross then you look at how.
Is it a new mutation?
Could the breeding be impure with the parents not showing signs of cross breeding and out comes the impurities further on.
We here in Australia have no idea of the diverse range of Parrot Finches available O/Seas
Once the member ruled out any chance of cross breeding then our answers became guesses.
We can have our opinions but few here have the experience with regard species not found in Australia.
