Hey Jay,
I've got a pair of LAUGHING Spotted Doves in my backyard. They are laughing because they are the best fed doves (I reckon) in Sydney. They wait every morning for the clear out of the sprouted seed and in the afternoon wait for the clearing of the budgie cage. They often come to the back door and sit and wait for the seed changeover. Beautiful birds and smart. I'm sure they can read the clock better than me. :)

My guess is that he probably doesn't and sused that you didn't either. Look for the tell-tale bowing and cooing of the male or put a largish mirror next to them and see if there is any reaction. Hope they didn't cost too much.

Well I don't understand... He had a careful of birds looking just like my immature, and a careful of adult 'males'... It just doesn't make sense.
Is there any other way to tell?
Fifty bucks... Again. *censored*.

Also he seemed like such a nice guy.

Plus he had maye fifteen birds to start with, and there was only one in each cage by the end...

Probably used one of those 'magnet-on-a-string-100%reliable-buy one,get one free' sexing devices . . . It's amazing how accurate they can be :silent:

Jay, $50 a pair isn't too bad a price for aviary bred, tame birds. They are somewhat of a novelty here in the east. In W A you probably couldn't give them away. It's all relative, in Europe and the USA they breed and pay good money for common Indian Mynahs. They are beautiful little birds, just because they are feral somewhere does not mean that they don't have value or should not be kept. I keep Blackbirds and Thrushes, people in Victoria think I'm mad. Enjoy them, and in time the sex of them will become obvious. Two males will fight, two hens might bond and lay 4 eggs instead of 2.

Thanks tint...
I would like a pair though.
Unfortunately DNA sexing costs so much... Apart from surgical what other ways are there? Ignoring stone on a string of course ;)

Db that's ok :P
Yes they are nice aren't they :) they were $30 a pair, thirty less than usual in Canberra. Bargain! I talked to a few guys about the breeder (of the red brows) and they said he was reputable.
I'm going by kingstons method of belly colour.. Brown in hens, grey in cocks. If that's so I have two of each :)
