Canaries in aviaries

Hi Guys,

Just a quick few questions,

Does anyone have any experience in keeping canaries in an aviary?

I have always kept them in cabinets and heard that these birds stress out in larger aviaries, is there any truth to this?

Also what is the breeding success like in an aviary?

Obviously it is more controlled in a cabinet setting but can canaries be bred easily in an aviary? and a mixed collection aviary at that?

I am intending to put some into a 3800 X 2500 X 1800h aviary with 1 pair zebs, 2 pair red brow, one pair gold finch and may some diamond sparrows.

Thanks

El Feroz

I keep my canaries in an aviary with zebs. However in late August/September I start pairing them in cabinets. After they had raised two lots of fledglings I released some with the fledglings into the aviary. One pair nested again in a finch nest box with a wide opening and fledged another pair.

I have bred canaries in both situations, I have found that they both breed well and I haven't noticed any stress on the aviery birds only they have to fly more to get to the chicks. Only in the aviery have I placed multiple pairs that have breed. I use my cabinets to pair up and to breed younger pairs.

They are great in my avairy, they keep to themselves. No problem mixing with my Zebs and Goulds.
I have only breed them in a Cabinet.

Fun bird to have..

One problem that I overcome by breeding in cabinets was that I did not have to feed all the greedy zebs with egg and biscuit and made sure it was there for the baby feeding canaries. The pair which raised young in the aviary did so on seed and fruit etc i feed in the aviary.
