thinking about getting finches

Hi my name is Chris and I'm new here. I currently own a breeding pair of green cheek conures but no finches. I was thinking about getting some finches but didn't know what type would be a good begginer finch. I was hoping someone could tell me which type I should start with, a nice cage size, a good diet, and how many I should get. Any advice would be great, I want to do all the research I can before getting finches.

Hi welcome to the forum Chris.
Your choice of finches will depend mainly on your cage/aviary size and if they are to be kept inside or outside.

They will be indoor. And is a 25L×21W×32H a good size cage?

Is that in cm or inches? if in cm, the base is only about the size of an A4 piece of paper, so I'd recommend a larger cage as they like to have space to stretch their wings. length and width seem to be more important than height as far as I've found with zebbies. The smallest cage I own is 1.2m wide and 40cm deep, with a height of about 50cm. I have one pair of zebra finches in there (though I know other breeders who hold 2 pairs in a cage that size), they're a great beginner finch as they're quite hardy and have a sweet little song.
Hope this helps- I'm sure other forum members will have other suggestions as well.

Oh sorry that's in inches, I live in California so we use inches not cm.

Chris Hi,You probably have a better array of finches where you live, foriegn finches i mean. But i think the gouldian in all its colours should be available to you in california, give them ago but i wouldn't put more than one pr in that size cage. Cheers Craig

Emblema ..Painted firetail .. Quirky little bird , not highly strung , will land on your hand when you feed them in a caged situation , make the most unusual noise and a nice bird to look at .

My favorite two are the zebra and society finches, would those be a good choice?

Do you think I could put 2-3 pairs of society finches in a 30"L×21"W×40"H cage?

Even if you only had the one pair of Zebras, they breed extremely well, to the point where you would fill the cage in no time. You would need to consider where you would be able to move the chicks to, and this wouldn't be just a one time thing.
I believe societies breed well too, maybe not quite to the volume of zebras.
One way around it would be to have just cocks or just hens.
