Today picked up some CYDECT5D from a local pet store to worm our birds and for Air Sack Mites.
Looks like the pet store have made up lots of bottles with about 300mls in them.

The question i have is,

the bottle reads Oral Tonic for Birds/rabbits/Rats...1m/5kg.

So how much CYDECT5D per litre of water, the fella in the pet store was a new and not sure.?????????????

Harv tells me that 5kg=5 litres..???????

Hi Brett,

What is the concentration of the active drug- moxidectin-in this product? It should be written on the label.
It is of questionable legality to break these products down into smaller amounts and then to on-sell them in a commercial setting anyway, but that's another issue. But if they don't label the bottles correctly, then that is poor form!
Once we know the concentration of moxidectin, we can advise a proper in-water dose rate.

Yes and no. In this case- no! ie the dose rate of 1ml/5kg is 1 ml drug to 5kg bodyweight of animal. This is a direct dose rate.
The in-water dose rate is INDIRECT because it is calculated on how much water the bird is expected to drink. You can't just interchange 1ml/5Kg with 1ml per 5L of water, because birds never drink their bodyweight in water.

If the concentration of moxidectin in this product is 2g/L, then the dose rate of 5mls/L drinking water suggested by Karl is correct.

If I've managed to confuse you then please ask again and I will try to answer your question more clearly

Good on the retailer to break it down and sell it in smaller quantities for hobbyists.

Here in NZ it is sold in 10.5 litres containers only. At 5 ml per litre of water - my dose rate also - it lasts the average birdkeeper a few days. At least I have a few hundred sheep to make sure it is used up before the expiry date.

cheers, case

Agreed. But this is exactly the problem when people who don't know what they're doing start messing around trying to sell drugs without proper directions.

You are certainly safe to use it at 5ml/L drinking water, but if you don't get the desired results you can increase it to 10 ml/L.

Alternatively, if you just have one or two birds which are badly affected you can use a drop direct to the beak.

@Brett, where did you get yours? Would be interested. Tried to get Scatt from vet, but he had none, he became irate when he found he could not get it, said he doesn't need script, so he will give us a call tomorrow, if he can obtain it. Thanks
