The only aggression I have experienced is against their own kind and that is disaster with a capitol D
I currently run single pairs in several aviaries, also in these aviaries are several species with red feathered Crimson Chats, Fire Finches etc
there are also Wrens in the aviaries as well.
When chicks are in the nest they are too busy feeding them to be aggressive.
I am not saying they won't sort some other specie out but over the years I have had no problems at all.
I actually have had far more hassles from Cubans so much so I won't keep them any more.
The last pair that I was given were so bad it was a case of going into the trap today or tomorrow it would be an air rifle task.
They literally belted the ...... out of my Napoleon Weavers and Yellow Siskins

Red Crested Finches
Post by E Orix » 16 Dec 2012, 11:25

From my bad experience Red Crested Finches absolutely hate Jacarinis Finches and Red Faced Parrot Finches.
It may not be all of them but one of my birds is frightening in the way that it attacks Jacarinis Finches.
Another literally slaughted my whole colony of Red Faced Parrot Finches when it decided to set up its breeding territory.
I guess I learned at the expense of my P.Finches. Last season I ran Blue Faced P/F's in that aviary without a problem

Thanks. your words can come back and bite you on the back side.
The post ended up half correct, I did have a cock bird who had a very bad
opinion of Jacarinis. These days I do not have that problem.
Jacarinis could be thought of as scaled down Red Crested's similar in many ways.
As for the Red Faced Parrot Finches, that actually ended up as incorrect and
the Red Crested wasn't the culprit.

Sounds like red cresteds and cubans are very similar in
A - You can get gentle well behaved birds who live harmoniously with everything but their own kind
B - You can get birds that fit the above description until breeding season when they do a Dr Jeckyle and Mr hyde
C - You can get untrustworthy horrors who should live only in their own avairy
With Cubans being moderately common those in group A get to breed most and are becoming more common over time
I assume that Red Cresteds are no where near common enough for this to apply yet, so encourage those who can afford them and can give them an avairy to themselves to do so
Thinking on the putor here

I have kept Red-crested for a number of years (3 individual pairs ) in mixed specie aviaries. In that time I have had one incident involving fledgling Green Singers. I removed the Singers and replaced them with Painteds without issue.

As above, yes you can have problems with some birds but to say they can only be kept and bred on there own to my mind is completely false.
