Ok with all the chata of late about hybrids it had me thinking of my painteds. Will a painted ever produce a hybrid as they are the only type of that genus emblems and are a speices of estrildid finch. If they are able what type of finch(s) would they be compatible with. Don't concern yourself as I'm not partaking in this project im just more curious that all.

Arther, i have actually seen hybrids between redbrows and painteds. The most striking part of this hybrid was that they looked like beautiful firetails and this chap who bred them was trying to sell them as such,i only wish i had taken a pic of them but it was quite a few years ago. Wow they actually do produce a hybrid, thought with their unique look of them they would produce a ugly hybrid.but to produce something like a beautiful firetail is interesting. So there you go thought I may have picked a finch that couldn't produce a hybrid

Yes the digital camera would have been a great tool 'back in the good old days' when photography was a hobby for people who were 'better off'crocnshas wrote:i only wish i had taken a pic of them but it was quite a few years ago. Cheers Craig
Nowadays my 4 year old grandaughter actually has her own D-C and can do more things with it than I can
But overall, without being too nostalgic, I think that the best days have gone

It's only in very recent years the Painted has been left behind in Emblema. For many years all firetails were classified as Emblemas with redbrows, red eared, beautiful and painted thought to be very closely related. Given known hybrids with redbrows, on that basis it would seem the birds know more than we do sometimes I suspect

And another hybrid 'tale' from the 'good ol' days' . .
Getting a bit off topic, but hey someone can drag it back . . but was reminded of this by Craig's story
On visiting a finch man back in the mid 70's in a metropolitan city, I was struck by a pair of handsome, largish birds that I had never seen before
Was informed that they were Java Sparrow x Chestnutbreasted hybrids . . OK fair enough
About 12 months later my mate got a phone call from a dealer in a different city offering him a pair of Hawfinches. He took up the offer and a fair bit of money changed hands
When the H-F's arrived I rushed in to see them, as I had never even seen a picture of a H-F let alone the real thing . . (many, many years B4 the digital age)
Lo and behold, there were the "Java Sparrow x Chestnutbreasteds" that I had seen a year or so ago
I told my mate that he had been dudded, and the dealer, after initially refusing to refund the money, did so when police became involved
Now, to further complicate the matter, a few years later I came across a coloured pic of a Japanese(?) Hawfinch
Yep . . The birds were Hawfinches all along
???????????????????????????????????????????
40 years down the track . . The original character in the saga is on duty in the 'Big Aviary in the Sky' . . and the dealer is probably helping out there as well . . I often wonder what ever happened to the feathered heroes of the tale??
And over a quiet beer or three, my mate and I still remain confused by it all when we chew over the story
Perhaps somebody should start a 'Tall Tales but True' thread
. . or . . Perhaps I have said too much

Some 30 + years ago a chap called Emile Serca(spelling?) had two Haw Finches. He passed away at a relatively early age and the 2 Haw Finches he had ended up at my home. After some research it was discovered that they were two hens and they had some age on them. One died and was given to a taxidermist and the other has faded in memory. This all happened in Melbourne, years later when I moved to the NSW border a person not 1km from my new home here has that actual mounted bird in his glass display case. How he got it who knows but it still has my personalised ring on it's leg.I would say its still there. They were ugly birds with oversized heads and a huge beak.

Arthur bet after a few drinks and a stroll down memory lane with your mate you two are still kicking yourself I would be letting a find like that and not knowing. Eorix guess you were meant to have them even after years she still came back in your life. Just googled hawfinch and what unique looking little bird. My guess would be there aren't any around.
