Just wondering why the number of eggs changes per clutch.eg a pair of my Zebs layed 3 eggs in a clutch and the next 5.My Goulds layed 3 eggs first clutch next just 2
Are there any reasons why the number of eggs layed changes.???
Thanks

The main factors that I have found with canaries and poultry, in no order have been:
1. Age, as birds get older they lay less eggs.
2. Feed. When there is ample feed and wide variety available the birds seem to lay more eggs. This includes green leaf vegetables.
3. Types of food. Since I have fed my canaries sprouted seed they now normally lay 5 eggs per nest. Previously it was more common to have 4 eggs per nest.
4. Season. If it is a wet breeding season then they tend to lay more eggs than if it is a hot, dry breeding season.
5. Number of clutches in the season
I would expect the same factors would apply with finches.

To add to what Canary said, first-year birds often start with smaller clutches.
