Hi Guys, Just wondering if someone can confirm if the two Double Bars i purchased about six weeks ago ARE indeed MALE as was sold to me by pet shop owner; and if the Cubans ARE indeed FEMALE as he told me they were?
The reason i dubious is - when i bought the Double Bars, he said they and the two Cubans were all male, but when i went back in there last week and seen the Cubans still there, i felt sorry for them so bought them too - but when i double checked with him that they were male as he had told me previously - he said no, they both female !!
And my next question is - if i was to put the Cubans with my longtails and bengalese - they wouldnt inter-breed would they ? Or would they ??

No need to worry about your Cubans interbreeding with grass-finches but maybe with other grassquits. I believe Tiaris could be correct correct in determining that the Cubans shown are a pair but a mature cock bird will usually have a much blacker face and brighter yellow halo - you'll know more by spring. As for the doublebars it's a LOT harder so I'll deferr on this species (the odds are 50% each way anyway!)

Jewel I believe tiaris is right about the Cubans hen on left and young cock on right but can't say anything about DBS as they still look the same to me and I only know by how the cock sings when separated from hen.

I think you need to see the double bars in real life to have a fair crack but I will have my guess.The bottom one has a clean belly a little more then the top.A hen would be not as clean as both i think. and the top one has a thicker band not that that means to much.The top one appears bigger then the bottom.And without looking at their crowns aswell. I would say two cocks.

I would say that the Cubans are a pair but the one on the right looks like a young cockbird but at its age I thought it would
be showing more black feathering as it seems to have been fledged for awhile. I guess time will confirm.
