I dont know much at all about the Javas but their actions seem like they just dont realise the chicks belong to them, they see them as some kind of invader needing to be killed and disposed of. Are the Javas just a young pair? Maybe its just inexperience?

The worst I have had with mine is a 1st time hen letting 2 nests in a row die once they start to finfeather. Think she overdid the fertility, as the nest were of 6 and 7. Following year she was just fine, but settled for 4 and 5. If they are eating the chicks it could be a dietry thing, try giving egg and biscuit mix.

A guy who lives two doors down from me has an amature radio mast. A LARGE one.

Its not in view of the birds but i know there are health risks linked to masts.

Could his be affecting my birds?

I would doubt it very much...when I was a young fella my father was into budgies finches & show canaries, as well as short wave radio and never had any problems, I just think if they are not used to cabinet or are a bit scared of nest inspections they will dispose of young...all animals do it, we had to leave a very pregnant silky terrier with sister inlaw (noisy household) to go to a funeral in another state, when we returned...Dog had had the pups but had killed them all and wouldnt let any of the strange family near her...

Maybe the parents feel that you are disturbing the nest too much?

As that was 6 years ago, the problem has been solved one way or the other.
