Those Damn Noisy Miners...

Hello All,

I have observed over the last seven months or so, since getting back into birds, namely Gouldians, that the damn Noisy Miners are causing my birds a hell of a lot stress...
Normally they slam and hang on the front of the aviary & my border collie makes a fuss and scares them off....

Now, I noticed today, they now are trying to attack the gouldians through the roof that is completely covered with Laserlight...This, for them, solves the problem of the dog scaring them off. They now jump and peck at the roof, scaring the poor birds.... The gouldians haven't learn't yet, that they cannot be harmed by these B*******'s of birds....

Has anyone learn't of a way to scare them off?...I would really like to solve this problem before I start to build and house some new aviaries...

I have trapped and moved them on and also Shot them but not a good idea in the city

Living in the city I would try the trapping solution.
Instead of releasing them elsewhere though maybe swimming lesson's would be good for them

Rather see them shipped down here than drowned, I know they're a pain but they are native.
ANU has lots, at lunchtimes there's rich pickings among student's lunch scraps - and a lot of students like them around.

I was chipped for rehoming them , something about not surviving without the family group .
I think they got off lightly considering other halfs option , least I know they have food /water /shelter .
Not a bad chance then of surviving in the new neighborhood .

Jaybird which miners are you talking about? The dark Indian miner birds are not native birds at all-and they as far as i am concerned are the problem makers as far as i am concerned-the Australian miner birds are native but there seems to be less of them around.

Well up here in Qld it is Noisy Mynahs, Indian Mynahs I dont see except in bigger Cities such as Bris Vegas

Talking about noisy miners, as stated in the topic line.
Indians are spelt Mynah and noisy (and other assorted native species) spelt Miner.
Noisys can be a bugger round bird aviaries.

We have noisy miners in the carpark at work (Greenslopes, Brisbane) which dive bomb people at any time of the year.

I hate to nitpick.
But.
Noisy Miners are a lot worse for the environment than Indian Mynas, although they might be native, rather than introduced, they are a lot more invasive, and dominiating the common 'garden' habitat (read, pretty much just a canopy). Most ecologists are trying hard to get them on the pest species list, so that people can take 'em for a swim. Common Mynas are very reliant on urban habitats and are rarely found in any agricultural or native land, and as such, pose much less of a threat to our species than the noisy miners which will chase the hell out of Regent Honeyeaters anywhere.
