I am keen to try breeding Red Brows.
I am planning to get three pairs and keep them by themselves in a planted aviary (1.5 x 2 x 1.8).
Two Questions:
What is the best time of year to look for breeding stock?
Is it better to source pairs from separate breeders or get them all at once?

good choice of finch bbb
they can usually be found in limited numbers at the various bird sales so keep an eye out for them.
sourcing from different breeders is always a good idea.
be aware that they are aviary bred and not wild-caught, question the seller etc.
i suspect wild-caught redbrows would not settle or attempt to breed readily.
mine nest in growing tea-tree in their flight and they love guinea grass(sorry i have none for sale at present).

That may be so in a smaller aviary . .

But in a very large planted set up they are magic

A bloke I know caught a pair that were regular visitors to the spot where he tossed his old seed

Within a fortnight they had nested and went on to produce four young

When the young were independent he caught the six and released them . . They all came back to the old feeding patch for some time, but after a while the young disappeared. Probably 'hunted' by Mum and Dad

The moral to this story . . . ?????????

Hi BBB,
if you haven't found any in a few months, let me know; I fledged one nest last week and another is due this week.
They are busy and beautiful, and easy to look after, though they do much better with some insect food (I use a lot of termites).
