Lesson learnt the hard way

This is not so much a general question as just a post to highlight my naivety - didn't know where else to post it.
Lost my beautiful cheeky GBWB male gouldian on Sunday. Found him on the bottom of the cage with dried blood all over his feet and belly.
Blood all over water dish rim and bottom of cage - at first i thought maybe a mouse coz the wire too small for the rat to get in - but all digits were present on his feet, nothing missing.
Conclusion : I think he sliced his feet on the pampas grass stalks and the stress killed him. Someone suggested night fright - so maybe he bumped around the cage and tried to land on the pampas but slid down the stalk.........
Cannot find any other cause for his demise apart form this. Said pampas grass removed now from all finch cages.
Feel so guilty i caused his death  Lost a fine specimen and cheeky bird.

Sorry to hear about your lose JEWEL,i take it you are growing pampas grass in your aviary.Pampas grass sap is poisoness and the straps are serrated with little hooks and are dangerous to all creatures, the plumes are quite safe to use as nesting material though. Craig

A lot of good advice on this forum sadly has to be repeated

Perhaps before a question is posed the 'search' function should be used

Not saying this to deter questions, or 'knock' anybody asking them, but it may save time in finding answers to 'frequently asked questions'

In this case there are 7 pages of pretty good advice on "Pampas Grass" just waiting to be accessed

No, I harvested it from out bush and brought it home and put it in my finch cages thinking it would lend some warmth with the fluffy plumes on a cold night. I had cut it off with a fair bit of stalk still attached.

Thank You for bringing this to my attention  . I have since read some of these posts, and logged off kicking myself for not having the hindsight to have done so sooner :(
I will keep it in mind for future subjects posted. Cheers. ;-)
