Phragmites question.

Can Phragmites tolerate subzero nights?
I want to put some in my refurbed aviary, but we will likely have frosts until about Melbourne Cup day, so I'm wondering if I should wait 'til November.
Thanks in advance,
mm.

If you are planting them in a water filled container and the water doesn't freeze solid, I would think that they would survive the winter once established. (We are talking reeds here people)

Matty, FYI the common name is REED.
Deb, I too was concerned he was building a cave - maybe to keep bats, dropbears or other creepy creatures.

I thought they might have been insects, till I read Tint's comment about water, then I totally just knew they were fishes!

For the record,
Phragmites tubers do survive in freezing water.
They are shooting now and I have moved them into the aviaries. The water in the bins they are in attracts/generates some little flying insects which the birds appreciate, and I have put mesh across the top of the bins (to avoid drowning birds) which the reeds can grow through.
