Im trying to determine the sex of some charcoal splits I bought in Gunnedah ......so far I have noticed that there is a definite colour difference of the beaks being that 2 are red and one is orange.
One of the dark beaks has orange cheek patches so im certain its a male but the other is charcoal and has no cheek patches .
My question is do charcoals develope the cheek patches ????
Is beak colour going to be enough to go on????
Am i right in assuming that the lighter beaked bird which has no cheek patches is female????? Thanx

hi . a pure charcoals don't have orange cheek patches. they may have a faint orange line toward the beak where a the cheek patch would be . in the hen its more mottled black to no black on the chest compared to the male which is solid black nswchainsaw has a pic of a pair somewhere in here. under the title egg in the forum....pete

My male charcoals have brown flanks as well as a black chest, I dont know if this is common to all charcoals though.

yes the males have brown / red flanks as well the bottom pic
of the charcoal is a hen but the slight red in the flanks is throwing me off a bit it has the chest baring of the hen. the other is a male(red cheeks) and a normal hen. i am not to sure on the understanding of splits in zebbies but i know with gouldians a split will show the colour of the bird its split for . hope i havnt confused you to much...pete

Happy ending I hope.....
