One sided sinus

Can any one shed some light on one sided sinus. I've referred to the guide to Gouldians which has little info on this, but steers me in this direction.

I have a fledged parson now 3 weeks old. I thought it had been pecked on the day of fledge. Weepy, pussy eye and discoloured facial feathers. Only on one side, the other looks healthy and normal. I thought it would loose the eye. Now its weaned, the eye is still intact and functional ( i think) .Feathers are wet and bare skin around the eyes and top of beak, sibling shows no symptoms.

I had a Pair yellow rumps sent from melbourne and i'm fairly sure the hen arrived with this. Her face on one side was not a white you would expect, more a dirty silver. Its now on both sides of her face. These birds are in seperate aviaires. Feathers look wet.

Possible causes??? Will a course of doxycylcine fix them. How contageous is this. Could i have transfered it to the parson in the nest via the yellow rump ( in another aviary)

Hi Chris,

It is likely to be a bacterial sinusitis (several possible bacteria could be involved); other possible causes are protozoal or fungal infections.

How contagious it is depends on the exact cause but potentially it is contagious and could be spread if the bird wipes its face on the perch etc.

Doxycycline may work but if the infection has been there too long the pus will have become hard and at this stage the only way to get it out is to cut it out and flush the sinuses with sterile saline.

I would isolate the affected bird to limit any potential spread to other birds and disinfect all the fixtures in the aviary in which it currently lives.
Treat it with the doxy for 7-14 days and monitor how it goes.
There would be no need to treat the other birds in the affected aviaries unless other birds start to show signs. If they do show signs then start treatment straight away.

Good luck with it and let us know how you go.
