Stoping breeding

I have read on the forum that breeding should be stopped during the hotter months from December through February.
But just how does one go about preventing finches from laying?
And should breeding be stopped during winter as well?
Thanks in advance

You can take all nest boxes and brush out but depends on the species so what specie are you planning to stop breeding as some breed at all different times.

Hey there.....I note you are in Currumbin....I am in Elanora. Happy to help with any of your questions.
With your above question, I let my birds breed year round....BUT, it depends on what you have. Gouldians usually moult this time of year so it is a stressful time (one of the reasons why Gouldian breeders take the nesting boxes out). All my natives are in full breeding mode and will stop naturally when it gets too hot. Generally most birds are clever enough to work it out. That being said, I have had Tri Coloured Parrot finch breed in the height of summer and the result was not pleasant.
Feel free to PM me if you want to chat further....

Thanks guys
Being a newb you sometimes get confused trying to sort the wheat from the chaff,
I am not sure that I want to stop them breeding, but I read that it's beneficial for the birds
to give them a rest.
Tony, would love to have a chat sometime, but I dont think I have been given access privileges
to the PMs yet.
Cheers
John

Birds will stop breeding in the hotter months by themselves, if they need too: usually (as stated below gouldians breed at this time & it would be a mistake to stop them breeding at that time). Birds should be stopped from breeding after 3 nests/ clutches as it drains the adults too much, 4 clutches maxxx. I stop my birds from breeding in late autumn by either, removing opportunities (nest box, sites), separating sexes, placing in holding aviaries (as it is boring & with less interesting foods). In canberra it is soooo hot in summer & so cold in winter, so I can see your problem, good luck. I depends on the finch species.
