Absolutely beautiful birds,i remember when i bred canaries,but they never looked that good,garyh

I bought some Fyfe canaries this year and have brought them on early with 3 nests due out next week.

How have you brought them on early?

Have you been using heat and light?

Hi garyh and Greg,

That is very early Jack. Have you brought them forward for show purposes or just as an experiment?

Over the last couple of months using a timer on my bird room lights I've had them coming on
earlier each week.Over the last few weeks they are set to come on at 5.30am.The signs were
all there with the cocks singing their heads off and when I threw in some teased hessian to the
hens and watched them gather it up in their beaks I started to pair them up.All 3 pairs mated
as soon as they were introduced and within a few days the first eggs were laid.
The main reason I have done it is part experiment! I want to finish them up from breeding
at the end of September so I can pull them from the breeding cabinets and put them in one
of my flight aviaries for the summer months where they can bathe daily.
I will keep you all posted on how things progress.

Just an update on the first young canaries, I have 2 nests with 2 young and 1 with 4 young.
Also 2 nests with eggs.Will update their progress next week.

Nice Work Branchez Congrats

Very interesting Jack,well done.So it looks like canaries can be bred all year round with the right conditions.Now you can have Christmas holidays because your breeding season will be over at that time of the year when they normally breed. Cheers Craig

I think that's a really interesting method for getting breeding out of the way before the summer heatwaves make things difficult.

Just an update on the school of July 2013.The first batch of youngsters(8) with 2 older birds.
Also have 2 nests with young and 2 with eggs, both 2nd clutches.
