Anyone know where I can get almonds in the shell? (bulk)

They are imported from the US of A and my usual supplier (Brisbane) will have none for 6 weeks . .

Well they may not be as cheap put we do grow almonds in Australia but they won't be ready for months. Gaganis Brothers in South Australia may still have stock from last season. Closer to Christmas if you want to source some second grade ones direct from the growers see the list on the Nuts Australia directory. There are lots of new orchards coming into production in the Riverina region and in South Australia so I expect that prices will drop - unless the wild cockies get to them first!

Many of the almond growers in Aus went under when Timbercorp collapsed about 3 years ago. Thus an expensive imported product previously suddenly became an expensive imported product again.

Harvest is March / April here, about now in US, which is why they'll be hard to get even as imports for a while.

I have been feeding my larger parrots almonds for the last dozen or so years and have never had a supply problem . . till now

My supplier told me that because of the current shortfall, all 'in shell' nuts are being processed for the more lucrative packaged product

. . . . Very sad situation when a food product can be transported all the way from California and be competitive with our own

Our govts seem more concerned with CSG and free????????????trade agreements than our own food security

Can you switch to pecan nuts? I have a tree in my own backyard (Brisbane) which the wild cockatoos love.

Well its a shame about the state of Agriculture in Australia - I guess I saw it coming when I went to the Philippines 8 years ago and now the National Vegetable Industry Centre where I worked doesn't is now a faint shadow of its past. Damned shame too about those tree crops schemes as they looked quite viable when I left.

Now for some information that's not out of date - Beware Australian Almonds from Woolworths - they can make you and your birds sick.
