Had a quick peek in a gouldian nest today as hen was out and about. I was expecting 7 eggs, could have knocked me down with a feather there is now NINE in there. It couldnt be from the same hen surely? Looks some of the eggs are already darker

Hate to be a party pooper but with nine eggs the age difference between the first and last hatched will probably make it impossible to raise all nine even if the parents could supply that much food. The larger hatchlings will simply outcompete the younger sibs and take all the food. Given that there are 9 eggs I'm almost certain that the nest has beeen parasitized by an interloper - finches aren't chickens.

My last clutch had 6 and at 2 weeks it was very crowded I'd hate to think what it would have been like with 9.

I just had a nest with 14 eggs in it. Was two hens nesting togeather, I ended up moving one hen out i think about 7 hatched the problem was 4 hatched at once then about a week later (maybe 10 days) 2 more hatched but they didn't feed the 2nd lot so they both died :/

still ended up with 3-4 out of it but it's a bit of a pain because i'm not sure who the mother is ! (They are both yellow so babys will be same )

Seems I have a new species.......The Gouldian Cuckoo

This morning I checked and now there is 10 eggs!

As much as it pains me the only thing I feel I can do is remove all the eggs except the five that have gone darker in colour. I really want to keep track of parents and offspring. According to my records the hen laid those 5 then it was a couple of days before the other eggs started to appear.
