HI all,

Just curious as to whether anyone has a say...top 3 type of green they give to their birds and why?

Just curious as I have noticed a rather large difference in the behaviour of my birds since I started giving them chicory last week.

Before that it was silver beet or thistles and seeding grasses. The silverbeet was not taken well and the grasses were only moderately taken...the chicory is eaten before I even leave the aviary.

I have noticed that my goldfinches, green singers and siskins have all started to singing like mad since giving them this.

No nesting yet though the goldfinches have come into great condition...they sound and look great. My singers are also looking better.

I guess if there is another green beg I haven't thought of that might be as beneficial I would like to know so I can try it...

Thanks

In no particular order, most of my birds eat all of these with gusto and they are nutritionally good:

- Green seeding grass
- Cucumber
- Kale

I have also been trying out new stuff like Wombok which my canaries smash and love the finches take to it ok mostly the stars. I put in cucumber and they go nuts. I have tried a veggie mix over the last week of some frozen stuff like pea's and corn and they go crazy over it but I don't feed it to much as I have seen different posts about corn beingf bad in large doses so I am not sure bout that. French millet is great for me to but cause I live a bit further out of town I can harvest a lot of fresh seed heads from the grasses and it works welll.

Might be a lil bit OT but I have heard of people feeding finches half cut whole boil chicken eggs? Is that correct and is it good for the birds? I have chickens but don't want to try it out as I'm not 100% sure. I understand that egg biscut mix would be made out of egg but yeah I dunno lol

i feed a lot of seeding grasses, rye, poa-annua,phalaris,wild-oats, johnston, guinea, couch etc etc. You name it and i have tried it.
also greens like milk thistles, dock, spinach/silverbeet, various lettuce varieties, celery, herbs like coriander, shepherd's purse etc etc.
while most finches adore these the one item mine cannot do without in my opinion is lebanese cucumber.i try and grow some but mainly rely on the supermarket and i buy at least a kilo per week.
apparently it contains plenty of nutrients....the birds seem to think so.
i believe my breeding results have improved over the past year or two and the cucumber is all i have changed in this time.
consistent supply(daily) is important and they barely leave the skin.
crank up the greenhouse/vegie patch and give them a go....

With breeding aviaries, mine get leb cucumber & frozen milk seed every day as a constant.
A wide variety of other fresh greens are picked from the garden, yard & paddocks whenever available in season & pegged up in the aviaries. This varies from up to twice a day in warm months down to barely once or twice a week in winter when the season is less generous. These extra greens include virtually everything finches will eat. Of these extra chickweed would be a standout favourite for most species especially at the green seed pod stage (just after the little white flowers finish) along with any of the panics as green seed heads including the larger tropical ones & panic veldt. Of the broadleaf ones I find the softer leafed ones such as bok choy & chicory are most favoured as they are easy for the birds to eat. Tougher broadleaf ones such as kales & hairy ones such as comfrey are far less palatable despite their more impressive nutrient status.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the dietary shortcomings of corn, lettuce, etc. - as long as they are part of a varied range of greens I'd still be happy to offer them with absolutely no fear of any problems.

Yes you can feed boiled eggs and shell as well if you nuke it...remove by any uneaten by end of day though...I seem to remember egg and biscuit mix is mainly custard powder....madeira cake works well also
