Adding nesting material

Today I bought some cane enclosed nesting boxes and some nesting material. My question is do I fill the nesting boxes with the material and then put them in the aviary or...?

I usually put some nesting material in the box/basket and then leave some nesting material in the aviary for the birds to finish building the rest themselves.

Thanks Diane, I'll give it a go when it cools down a bit.

if you can make a wire basket to put the nesting material in, so its not directly on the floor, that way it stays a little cleaner...pete

Thanks Poitta, I lined the rear of the aviary with some brush screening so they can go for their lives and pull bits out of that :)

Like Diane and Pete say. Also, if you have access to 20/40cm lengths of grass, lots of birds like to do some weaving round with that too. Good luck with the coming breeding season.

I always put some grass in to start them off, but I never liked using little cane baskets, damn hard to get your hand in if needed, I prefer to make boxes or use trees, at the moment I am using boxes & round things made from pig wire about 2-3 ft high & I jamb it full of Kikuyu grass & runners, then I put some holes for nests.
In some of my pics of Zeb & Manikins you will see I use baby formula tins, they worked real well, oh & I also used coffee tins.
My friend uses the plastic bottles we get laundry detergent in.

I have hanging home made baskets of cotton wool, feathers (emu and chicken) and all the grasses possible.

Thye soon pick and choose what they want and build accoringly.

Good luck
